A. WINTER SCHOOL:

MULTIMODAL X-RAY IDENTIFICATION TECHNIQUES FOR SECURITY APPLICATIONS

Winter School course description:

This course describes the X-ray techniques that are currently used in the baggage screening equipment for threats detection in Security applications, a domain where nowadays the security companies are highly looking for skilled scientists. The course begins with the basic principles used in X-Ray baggage scanners: X-ray generation and emitted radiation spectrum, interaction of X-ray with matter and continue with radiation shielding and protection against radiation. The next parts contain presentation of various X-Ray techniques implemented in baggage screeners, such as: dual-energy, multi-energy, dual-view, diffraction pattern detection, ending with the most advanced of them, the 2D & 3D X-ray Tomography. A special attention and detailed presentation will be given to materials identification performances for each type of X-Ray screening techniques. The final part will focus on scanning and interaction data simulation for developing preliminary tomography tests by using GEANT4 software package from CERN. For introducing similar applications, an X-ray microtomography for materials physics properties analysis is presented followed by practical and interactive experiments offered to students in two X-ray laboratories equipped with various imaging systems for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and materials identification.
